Collection: 1920s
Costume jewellery in the 1920s was a dazzling reflection of the era’s cultural and artistic movements, embracing bold designs, luxurious materials, and global influences.
The decade was defined by the Art Deco movement, which introduced geometric shapes, symmetrical patterns, and sleek, modern aesthetics. Jewellery became more structured, featuring angular designs and vibrant colours. The flapper style encouraged long, layered necklaces, dangling earrings, and ornate headpieces, complementing the daring fashion of the time.
Jewellery makers favoured platinum and white gold, often set with diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. Faux pearls and glass beads were widely used to create affordable yet glamorous pieces. The discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 sparked an Egyptian Revival, leading to motifs inspired by hieroglyphs, scarabs, and pharaohs.
Renowned designers such as Coco Chanel revolutionised costume jewellery, making it a fashionable statement rather than a mere imitation of fine jewellery. Jean Fouquet and Suzanne Belperron embraced Art Deco aesthetics, crafting striking, avant-garde pieces.
The Roaring Twenties were marked by social liberation, influencing jewellery to become more expressive and daring. The rise of jazz culture and Hollywood glamour encouraged extravagant accessories, while international influences from Egypt, Africa, and East Asia introduced exotic motifs and materials
