Francois for Coro RARE Standing Lion Brooch
Francois for Coro RARE Standing Lion Brooch
Francois for Coro RARE Standing Lion Brooch featuring a magnificent roaring lion in what I believe is pewter with two blue glass cabochons for his eyes. A complex design with wonderful detailing, such as the lion has been designed so that he can stand up, also his tongue appears to be suspended as you look into his open mouth, it is actually secured discreetly on the reverse, which is particularly effective in its execution. This handsome beast with a huge textural mane is 4.8cm at his highest point and 5.5cm wide and he weighs 35g. It has a rollover clasp and is signed on an oval cartouche (C) Francois in the earlier script mark. Adorable character as well as a very rare and highly unusual piece by one of Coro's finest designers. I would date at 1950's to be safe, but it could well be early 1940's. Whoever chooses him will not be disappointed, he is utterly charming.
Francois joined Coro in 1937, one of many designers who worked for the company over the years. Francois handcrafted pieces were of a high quality and were sold to the more exclusive stores for the affluent customers. The Francois brand came to an end in the late 1960's when Coro itself were struggling. Coro Canada Inc registered the Francois trademark in 1977, but they used capital letters on the cartouche rather than the earlier script.
