Born Maria Adélaïde Nielli, the world came to know her as Nina Ricci, a French fashion designer of Italian descent. In 1904, she married Luigi Ricci, a gardener and flower seller, and they had a son, Robert. However, the marriage was short-lived, and Luigi died, leaving Nina Ricci to raise her son alone. She remarried in 1916 to Gaston Morel.
After her first husband's death, Nina Ricci dedicated herself to her craft, spending countless hours behind sketches and with a needle and thread. In 1908, she joined the House of Raffin as a designer, where she worked for over twenty years and eventually became a business partner. However, by the early 1930s, the House of Raffin went bankrupt and ceased to exist. At the age of 50, Nina Ricci considered retiring.
In 1932, at the insistence of her son Robert, she established her own fashion house, Nina Ricci. Her designs were known for their elegance, femininity, sophistication, and romance. Initially, the Nina Ricci Fashion House specialized in wedding dresses, which remain renowned worldwide.
Nina Ricci passed away in November 1970. Her son Robert then took over the company, leading it until his death in 1988. After Robert, management passed to her son-in-law, Gilles Fuchs.
In 1984, Robert Ricci partnered with Maurice J. Bradden of D’Orlan Jewelers Ltd. of Toronto. This collaboration was driven by the high-quality, classic designs of D’Orlan that complemented the Nina Ricci image. Together, they developed an esteemed 22-karat triple-plating process over a pewter base, ensuring consistent colour, which was incorporated into both D’Orlan and Nina Ricci jewellery lines.
